BENGALURU — What shapes a city’s identity? Is it its towering skyscrapers and tech parks, or is it the rich tapestry of memories, traditions, and cultural landmarks embedded in its neighborhoods? Project560, initiated by the India Foundation for the Arts (IFA), explores this question by delving into the often-overlooked aspects of Bengaluru’s local heritage.
Rediscovering Rajajinagar Roshini M, a conservation architect, has focused on her 75-year-old neighborhood of Rajajinagar. Through a cultural map, Roshini highlights significant but lesser-known locations such as Rajajinagar Memorial Pillar and the Rumale Art House. Her project aims to spotlight these historical gems and the traditional “katte” — community spaces around old Banyan trees — which are increasingly rare in newer parts of the city.
Memory Mapping in Yelahanka Visual artist Lakshmi Nagaraj, originally from Yelahanka, created a 7.5 by 13-foot map representing her neighborhood’s history. Using memory mapping sessions, Nagaraj captured both physical locations and emotional connections shared by residents. Her work, including a painting of a now-closed boutique, reflects on how transient spaces impact collective memory.
Theatrical Exploration of Majestic Theatre practitioner Chandra Keerthi B has turned his exploration of Majestic into a guided walk performance. By narrating the area’s past through a character, Narada, and visiting landmarks like Priyadarshini Restaurant and his family’s old printing press, Keerthi aims to preserve and convey the essence of Bengaluru’s evolving identity.
Exploring Northeast Indian Influence Prithiraj Borah, an assistant professor from VIT, examined the Northeast Indian community in Kalyan Nagar. His exhibition featured photographs and interactive food experiences from local shops, highlighting how these spaces offer a sense of belonging and reflect Bengaluru’s diverse and inclusive nature.
Project560 underscores the importance of preserving and celebrating Bengaluru’s unique local heritage amidst its rapid urban development.
