Bengaluru: Police resorted to mild caning on the morning of Monday January 31 after a protest between two student groups got violent, injuring an Assistant Commissioner of Police at Bangalore University’s administrative block.
According to police, a group of post-graduate students were protesting in Raichur over the alleged desecration of BR Ambedkar’s portrait. Meanwhile, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) allegedly started a protest at the same location without permission, seeking examination reforms.
A fight broke out between the two groups in a matter of minutes. The police officers on the scene sensed the situation was going out of control and intervened. During the melee, an ACP was pushed by the students and got his hand injured.
Following this, the police used mild caning to disperse the crowd.
The ABVP members then moved their protest to the Jnanabharathi Police Station, where they demanded action against police brutality.
