Bengaluru: The ‘Silicon City’ became a witness for one of the rarest of the operations in the medical field in the Apollo Hospital in the city. A Yemeni war victim who had a critical injury on his penis had it reconstructed.
An 8-hour-long painstaking critical surgery by the doctors there is being commended as the war victim is now out of danger, according to the hospital sources.
Earlier in August, the victim’s penis was operated upon with the surgeons using the skin and muscle of his left arm.
The doctors reconnected the nerves and blood vessels to bring back the blood circulation in his penis and also the sensation. His penis was reconstructed using forearm flesh.
Senior Consultant Plastic Surgeon Dr. Naveen Rao said that the victim was going through an excruciating pain and was literally disturbed psychologically after he was attacked by the extremists’ group in Yemen during which his penis was almost cut.
He said that they had to counsel him before the surgery.
Dr. Naveen Rao’s team was also supported by Senior Consultant Urologist Dr. Deepak Bolbandi.
The doctors say that it was difficult to converse with him as he did not know any other language but Yemeni. With the help of an interpreter, the doctors understood that the victim was under a trauma imagining that he would be neglected by his wife and that he could not lead a happy life anymore.
The doctors have assured him of a normal life and asserted that he had retained his reproductive abilities.
The victim is now discharged from the hospital and has left to his country.
