Bengaluru: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that he was aware of the Supreme Court (SC) directions to the State Election Commissions (SECs). Stating that the Government is ready for elections, he said I will have to see what decision is taken by the SEC Commission, and further affirmed that as SC order applies to all states and local bodies, after discussion with SEC will do as it says.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday May 10 directed State Election Commissions to hold polls for local bodies whose terms have come to an end. This will have a bearing on long-delayed polls for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Taluk Panchayat (TP) and Zilla Panchayat (ZP) polls in the State. The term of the BBMP ended in September 2020, while that of ZP and TP across the State ended in March 2021.

“The issue will be studied in-depth. Law department has been informed, and they will also be studying the matter. We are ready for the elections, he reiterated.

It can be recalled here that the BJP Government has not cleared the elections for the local bodies in the State, citing a Supreme Court order mandating the fixing of quota for Other Backward Castes in local bodies only on the basis of an empirical study.
