Rise in crime against children in K’taka raises alarm

Bengaluru: From 2018 – 2021, the State witnessed highest number of atrocities against children. The data has been shared by State Women and Child Welfare Minister Halappa Achar in a reply to a question raised by Congress MLC U. B. Venkatesh.

According to the data, in the year 2018, 1,410 cases of sexual assault on children was reported in the State. It jumped to 1,613 in 2019. In the year 2020, the cases fell to 1,574 following the Covid – 19 related lockdowns. However, it jumped to 1,761 till November in the year 2021.

There is an increase in sexual harassment on children in these four years period. In all 651 cases were reported in the year 2018 which declined to 583 next year. In the year 2020, 567 cases were reported. But in the year 2021, the number jumped to 709.

Another major social evil faced by the children is child marriages. The State witnessed increase in the child marriages also in this period. For example, in the year 2021, 223 cases of child marriages were reported. It was 74 in the year 2018, 108 in the year 2019, and 180 in the year 2020.
