Bengaluru: St. Joseph’s High School in the City is among a few schools in five cities of the country where Safe School Zone has been set up. This road safety concept has been set up in the school area on a trial basis.
When said, Safe School Zone that extends upto 300 feet from a school crossing or border of school property. In the area, an additional care is needed due to an increase in school-related pedestrian and vehicular traffic. A typical ‘School speed limit’ sign mark the beginning of such zone and ‘end school zone’ sign represents the end of such zone.
St Joseph’s High School in Bengaluru was the result of 3M’s initiative, ‘Young Change Agents for Road Safety’ in partnership with Concern for Road and Pedestrian Safety (CoRPS) and United Way of Bengaluru. Fort High School, Chamrajpet in the City is another school that has set up this initiative.
According to stakeholders of the initiative, they plan to set this up at least 100 schools across the country by next year, and then approach the Government to make it a full-fledged programme.
