Bengaluru: The state government rejected the Rs.158 crores caste census carried out by the previous state government led by Siddaramaiah. A decision in this regard was taken on Thursday’s state cabinet meeting.

The meeting rejected the census report citing it as an unscientific exercise. With this, Rs.158 crores taxpayers’ money has gone down the drain.

Three powerful communities of the state i.e. Vokkaliga, Lingayat, and Brahmins are opposing this census. Their worry is that if the report is released, it may make way for the political empowerment of Other Backward Classes.

As per the leaked findings of the report, the SC are in a majority in the state followed by Muslims. Both Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities are shown less than 10% of the state population in the report.

Even though Siddaramaiah himself wanted to approve the report when he was the CM, several of his ministerial colleagues led by DK Shivakumar opposed it. The JDS is against the caste census from the beginning.

A couple of months ago, Siddaramaiah had said that the caste-census, also known as Socio-Economic and Educational Survey, could not be completed during his tenure, however, the report has been submitted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes to the B.S. Yediyurappa-led government.

He had stated that the BJP was all set to reject the report. The caste-census, which is believed to be the first such effort after 1931, covered over 1.35 crore households across the State during 2015.
