Bengaluru: SATS Ltd. (SATS) has announced that building work on its central kitchen in India has begun. The 20,000 square metre kitchen will be the largest and first of its kind in India, and will be located at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIAB/BLR Airport).
According to the sources, the kitchen will use automation and smart technology to make healthy, tasty, and safe food at a low cost. It is likely to produce up to 1.7 lakh meals per day. An automated rice line that can produce up to 600 kg of different types of rice in an hour and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for monitoring food temperature are two examples of modern technology that will be deployed.
As per the reports, the structure has also been built keeping sustainability and security in mind. It is India’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified frozen food manufacturing facility with an IoT building management system for proactively tracking and regulating consumption. The facility includes MERV-13 to 16 air filtration capability and a dedicated fresh air supply receptive zone, as well as Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) technology that uses UV – C rays to disinfect the air and touchless operations in response to Covid-19.
The kitchen will also be house to an innovation centre that will be linked to Singapore’s SATS Innovation Hub. The India Innovation Centre will allow partners to take use of SATS’ product and packaging development capabilities to innovate and introduce new cuisines and products to the Indian market. SATS’ technological know-how on shelf-life extension food technology can also be used by partners to reduce food waste.
