Bengaluru: The home district of Health Minister U T Khader, Dakshina Kannada has witnessed three Dengue deaths, this year as confirmed by the Health and Family Welfare Department.

dengue“There has been a rise in cases from the third week of June to the first week of July. Compared to last year, this is a three-fold increase. On July 19 last year, the district had reported only 95 cases”, said Dr Ramakrishna Rao, District Health Officer, Dakshina Kannada to sources.

He attributed the rise in Dengue cases this year to incessant rains.

“We have asked the public to watch out for mosquito bites during the day as this is a major feature of Aedes mosquitoes that cause dengue.”, said Dr B G Prakash, State Surveillance Officer, Vector-borne Disease Control Programme.

“The health department has deputed officials in all target locations to conduct house-to-house surveys and spread awareness. This is why more number of people were screened and more cases were reported.”, he said.

Vatsala, Chief Health Officer, BBMP said, “We will deploy one additional gangman in each of the 132 core areas. With this, the number of gangmen will increase from three to four in each ward. In 63 outer areas, two additional gangmen will be deployed in each ward. Earlier, only three were doing the job here,” she said.

The state has recorded 353 dengue cases in just 48 hours from July 20. This sharp rise from 1,660 cases to 2,013 has put the doctors on alert. The district also registered the second highest number of dengue positive cases in the state at 314.
