Shoe Bhagya: Govt. school children to get shoes, socks from June

Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday during the Cabinet meeting decided to provide a pair of shoes and two pairs of socks by June to 48 lakh schoolchildren studying from classes 1 to 10.

The Shoe Bhagya scheme for children studying in government schools would cost the State exchequer Rs. 120 crore. The school development monitoring committees will be given the responsibility of distributing shoes and socks.

According to sources, the cost of each pair of shoes and two pairs of socks for students of classes 1 to 5 costs Rs. 225. It costs Rs. 250 for students of classes 6 to 8, and Rs. 275 for students of classes 9 and 10, respectively.

Shoes and socks to schoolchildren were announced during the State Budget for 2015-16. The Cabinet has decided to provide free bicycles to class 8 students studying in government and aided schools. It would cost the State Rs. 188 crore, sources said.
