Bengaluru: An ambitious scheme aimed at improving attendance of girl students in schools is set to join the list of schemes that were withdrawn as soon as they were launched. The state government has decided to stop giving an incentive of Rs 2 every day to a girl student attending school.
The scheme was started on January 1, 2014 based on Chief Minister Siddaramiah’s budget promise and aimed to reach nearly 3 lakh girl students in class one every year.
Replying to a question by BJP member Tara Anuradha on stopping the fund allocation to the scheme, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait told the Legislative Council on Friday that the benefits would be extended to girl students in a different form.
The minister said that the scheme did not have a significant impact on the enrolment of girl students. The Gross Enrollment Ratio was 99.42 % for girls and 99.89% for boys. Other incentives, such as supplying workbooks for students from class four to nine, would encourage students, he argued.
