State govt to construct five lakh houses in rural areas

Bengaluru: The State Government plans to complete the construction of more than five lakh houses for poor in rural areas, according to Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra.

State govt to challenge Katta's acquittal-1Briefing media persons after Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday, Minister Jayachandra said the state government had a target of constructing 15 lakh houses in rural areas in five years. “The state government had constructed 9,61,863 houses till September end. The Cabinet meet has decided to complete the construction of more than five lakh houses during the next one-and-half years,’’ Minister Jayachandra said.

The minister said the allotment of houses to the beneficiaries would be based on the recommendation of gram panchayats. “The selection of beneficiaries will be based on the list prepared by the respective gram panchayat,’’ the minister said.

Gastroenterology and Organ Transplantation Hospital

The minister said the Cabinet has approved the proposal to construct Gastroenterology and Organ Transplantation Hospital for the benefit of below poverty line (BPL) families on the premises of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases in Bengaluru. “The Cabinet has approved the proposal to construct 250-bed hospital at an estimated cost of Rs 76 crore. The state government will grant Rs 50 crore and the remaining amount is expected to collect from donors,’’ the minister said.

Power from sugar factories

The Cabinet has also okayed the proposal to purchase power from sugar factories that generate electricity from bagasse.”Twenty eight sugar factories have come forward to generate electricity from bagasse. The target is to generate 501 mw of electricity in five years. The state government will buy electricity generated by the sugar factories,’’ the minister said.

Good Samaritan Act

Minister Jayachandra said the Cabinet has decided to introduce Good Samaritan Bill in the next legislature session to protect the Good Samaritans who come to the rescue of accident victims. The proposed Good Samaritans and Medical Professional Protection Bill would have the provisions to encourage people to rush to the aid of accidents victims. “The government will not only protect them from police harassment but also have the provision for reimbursing the expenses incurred by the Good Samaritan while admitting the victims to the hospital,’’ the minister said. He said the state government has allocated Rs 5 crore for this purpose.

Land for JD(S) office

The Cabinet has also decided to allot a land for the construction of Janata Dal (Secular) office. Accordign to the minister, the JD(S) has been allotted 40,410 sqft of land near Krishna Flour Mill in Bengaluru on a 33-year lease basis. “The rent for the land is fixed at Rs 12,000 per month,’’ the minister said.
