Bengaluru: The Supreme Court of India has rejected the bail petition of Immadi Mahadeva Swamy, accused no 1 in the Sulvadi Maramma temple prasadam poisoning case. The order was passed by a three-judge bench, headed by Justice N V Ramana.

It can be recalled that 17 devotees died and 117 others fell ill after consuming poison-laced prasadam distributed in the temple on December 14, 2018. It has been alleged that the Swamy conspired with others to mix pesticides with the prasadam in order to gain control of the temple.

Following the incident, the state health department issued a slew of guidelines for the preparation of prasadam and food for mass consumption.

The temple has been shut down ever since the incident and has presently been taken over by the state endowment department.
