Bengaluru: Even though it is assumed that senior citizens are the victims of social unrest due to the Covid – 19, the data however suggests a different picture. According to the data, in the first 8 months of the year 2021, 347 cases of assaults were reported on senior citizens which is low compared to the previous years.

A huge number of complaints of assault happened within the family. 234 cases of assault on senior citizens were committed by family itself. 82 assaults were done by other individuals while 11 cases were registered against service providers.

In 2020, a total of 659 cases were registered in the entire year. The figure was 1,459 in the year 2019. In the year 2018, 1,159 cases were registered across the State.

In Bengaluru, the police decided to register the home-alone senior citizens station-wise to ensure that their grievances will be addressed immediately and their well-being is monitored regularly.

According to City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant, the senior citizens can visit their nearest police station and register themselves for enhanced security. The senior citizens can register their names online itself. Police too pay visits to their houses regularly.
