Tumakuru: Teacher gets 3-year jail term for injuring student’s eye in 2011

Tumakuru: A private school teacher has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined Rs. 10,000 by the Third Additional Civil and JMFC Court here for severely punishing a seven-year-old student for not studying properly in 2011, resulting in the girl losing vision in her left eye.

Rahat Fatima of Tumakuru’s Bharat Matha School has been identified as the teacher. The teacher caned the girl for not studying properly on February 17, 2011, injuring her left eye.

The girl, who is now in first PUC, is the daughter of a labourer, was unable to regain her vision despite repeated treatment. The case was investigated by Tilak Park police, who filed a chargesheet.
