Tumakuru rape case: ASI gets 20 years RI, one lakh fine

Tumakuru: The Second Additional District and Sessions Court on Monday January 31 sentenced Assistant Sub-Inspector Umeshaiah to 20 years rigorous imprisonment and was imposed fine of Rs. one lakh for raping a 32-year-old mentally challanged  woman. The fine should be given to  the woman as compensation.

The Sessions Judge S. S. Mallikarjuna convicted  the accused on Friday January 29 and announced the punishment on Monday January 31.

It is said that ASI  Umeshaiah allegedly raped the woman on January 15 , 2017 at Antarasanahalli while on night patrolling. Followed by complaint of  parents, the Police registered a case and submitted chargesheet.

The issue also evoked widespread condemnation across the State.
