Tumakuru: In a tragic incident, two breeding horses at the Kunigal Stud Farm died after being attacked by a swarm of bees.
The male horse from Ireland Sanus Per Aquam (10), and the male horse from the USA Air Support (15) died in the bee attack. The incident occurred when as usual the two horses were allowed to graze at the paddock on Wednesday January 4 and at around 1.00 pm, they were attacked by a swarm of bees. When the horses collapsed staff at the stud farm informed the veterinarians. Despite veterinarians’ efforts the horses died. While Sanus Per Aquam died on Thursday, Air Support died on Friday.
The United Racing and Bloodstock Breeders (URBB), a subsidiary of the UB group, housed in the Kunigal Stud Farm, had bought the horses six years ago by paying Rs 1 crore each, according to sources.
Sources also explained that it is the first incident since the establishment of Stud Farm. The farm was established by Tipu Sultan 260 years ago. The management of the farm maintained that the tragic death of two breeding horses has caused heavy losses for the URBB.
The American racehorse had participated in the Virginia Derby and many other international events while the horse from Ireland won three times in the Five Star Derby.
