Bengaluru: The High court bench led by the Chief Justice stayed the execution of Umesh Reddy, who was sentenced to death in a rape and murder case, till the court adjudicates his plea for commuting death penalty to life imprisonment, thereby giving momentary relief.
The court after issuing the interim stay order served notice to both centre and state governments to raise objections within 10 days and adjourned the proceedings by 15 days. A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice Budihal R.B, passed the interim order after preliminary round of hearing of Reddy’s petition.
For Umesh Reddy rapist and serial killer presently lodged in high security Hindalga jail in Belagavi, this amounts to relief to escape from gallows temporarily. Earlier he had sought change in his sentence from death to life term which was subsequently rejected by the apex court.
