Bengaluru: The state education department has appealed to the Centre to consider teachers as frontline workers and include them as a priority in the nation-wide COVID-19 vaccination drive.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar on Friday, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, stating that the staff of the education department, especially the teachers, have played a major role in the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He enclosed a copy of the state Chief Secretary’s proposal regarding the issue and stated that including teachers as a priority for vaccination would be the “best recognition” for their services.

Minister Suresh Kumar pointed out to the fact that teachers provided services by collecting data by going door-to-door, propagating the importance of social distancing, helping health workers, and other related activities. He added that by approving the Chief Secretary’s proposal, the Centre would instil some much needed faith in the system.

It can be recalled that earlier this month, schools and colleges started offline classes, especially for students of class 10, Pre-University, and second and final year degree.

The vaccination drive, on the other hand, began in Karnataka on January 16. At present, the drive is covering medical and paramedical staff on a priority basis and so far, a total of 2.84 lakh people have been vaccinated.
