Bengaluru: Minister for Bengaluru Development K J George on Thursday said the people of Bengaluru are not against to the proposed steel flyover between Basaveshwara Circle and Hebbal.
Interacting with media persons at Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office here, Minister George said that only a few organizations have been opposing the construction of the steel flyover. “These organizations have been trying to depict their opposition as the opposition of the people of entire Bengaluru. They are the opinion that government should listen to them and function as per their whims and fancies. The government cannot function as per their direction. It is the government elected as per democratic norms,’’ Minister George said.
Stating that he cannot comment on the issue since it is in the court, the minister said the proposal of elevated corridor was mentioned in Congress manifesto. “The proposal of steel flyover was proposed in the state budget. The proposal was aimed at providing a solution to traffic problems on this busy stretch. Only some people are opposing the construction of steel flyover. They have some stakes in opposing the steel flyover,’’ the minister said.
He said the steel flyover would have a toll and the motorists have to pay the toll fee for using the flyover. “However, there will be a provision for motorists below the flyover to commute without paying toll,’’ he said.
Criticising BJP MLA S Suresh Kumar for demanding the government to cancel the proposal of constructing the steel flyover, he said many developmental works, including construction of flyovers, took place in Rajajinagar Assembly segment. “No one opposed the construction of flyovers in Rajajinagar assembly segment. I do not know why these people are opposing the construction steel flyover. We have made it clear that thousands of saplings will be planted to compensate the loss of hundreds of trees to facilitate the construction of the steel flyover,’’ he said.
