Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s statement on stepping aside to make way for a Dalit chief minister has already created many ripples in state’s political spectrum.

“Ready to step aside,if the party decides to have a Dalit chief minister”, he had said indicating his desire to go by high command’s decision.

State Congress Chief G Parameshwara, Leader of Opposition in in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, veteran leader K H Muniyappa and Public Works Department (PWD) minister and close confidante of Siddaramaiah H C Mahadevappa are among the front runners from Congress for the top slot representing the Dalit community.

Commenting on the issue, Parmeshwara said that the party high command would take note of Dalits’ aspiration as they were expressive in 2013 itself and take a call on it. He also observed that there were many aspirants for the top post, including himself, and ultimately the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will elect its leader. “I will convene the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting after results and if it elects Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister, I have no objection”, he explained, expressing his willingness to go by the party diktat.

“Its a media ploy to create difference within the Congress party ranks”, said Mallikarjun Kharge, who preferred to wait for the results which are expected in the next 24 hours. Ready to abide by the high command decision, Kharge  felt that the issue of Dalit CM gives media more fodder than anything else at this juncture.

Considered a dark horse, in case Congress party gets majority, K H Muniyappa, veteran leader from Kolar said he would abide by the decision of the high command. He reminded his service to the party in various positions, while thanking the party for providing an opportunity to serve as union minister.

Siddaramaiah made the statement following assembly elections on May 12 in which exit polls predicted a hung Assembly with the possibility of the Janata Dal (Secular) emerging as the kingmaker.

Political analysts feel it’s a clever ploy by the chief minister to checkmate state JD(S) Chief H D Kumaraswamy from occupying the top post, in case Congress falls short of majority and strengthen the party position in the event of close finish.

For now, just wait and watch for the political end game, “Art of the impossible” to unfold!
