Karwar: The district court declared a husband as an accused in its judgment on November 21 in a dowry death case and reserved the quantum of punishment.

Raghavendra, a resident of Pancharashiwada demanded 56 grams of gold as dowry before marriage in April 2009. Later, he agreed to marry Shobha, when her family convinced him to accept 32 grams. However, after the marriage husband Raghavendra started harassing his wife for more dowry, after returning home in inebriated state. Unable to bear the repeated physical and mental harassment, wife Shobha committed suicide in June 2009 by dousing herself in fire.

A case was registered in connection with the incident and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) provided evidence to the court, sufficient enough to prove husband Raghavendra guilty.

District Judge V S Dhawrwadkar, after scrutiny declared husband Raghavendra as guilty in the case under sections 498( a), 304 (b), 306 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 3,4 of DP Act.

The district judge will announce the quantum of punishment against the accused on November 27.
