Karwar: Members of as many as 15 families submitted a written memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti on Saturday December 3 seeking title deeds for the houses of Pourakarmikas and sweepers, residents of Mahatma Gandhi Harijana Colony in Old Meenupet, as per the Government order.

The appeal, led by the Ambedkar Progressive Dalita Vedike, hinted at a strong struggle against the ongoing behind-the-scenes efforts to evict the residents of Harijana Colony in Kumta from their existing residential homes. There are more than 90 Pourakarmikas working in Kumta Municipality and the Government should construct houses for all, they demanded.

It can be recalled here that in a meeting held on March 8, 2019, the Chief Secretary had directed the Government to list the quarters where permanent Pourakarmikas were staying before 1973 and submit them through the Deputy Commissioner.
