Kasaragod: The Kerala Animal Husbandry Department will cull pigs here in Emmakaje Gram Panchayat where African swine flu has been detected.

The culling will take place at a private farm in Katukukke under the Panchayat. Several deaths of pigs at the farm resulted in officials testing samples from the pigs and the report turned positive for the contagious African swine flu.

The District Administration also has taken preventive measures to stop the spread of the disease. Pig slaughter and the sale of pork are banned around a 10 km radius of the farm. Moreover, the culling will be carried out scientifically with the area being monitored for the next four months.
