Velangode AC Kannan Nair Memorial UP School is gearing up for ‘Praveshotsava’ (return of students to school) on June 6 and in this regard sculptor, Sudhakaran has been called in.
The renowned sculptor has made beautiful sculptures of little school kids wearing uniform, holding books in hands.
This depicts the students’ first day in school. The artwork has been put together wonderfully using natural ingredients.
The face of the artwork has been made using coconut, the hair using ropes and coir and the body has been made using coconut fronds. The school management hopes that this move will make kids happy and create curiosity to explore more about the sculptures.
Sudhakar is a household name because of the simplicity of his artwork. A former quarry worker, Sudhakar lost his hearing ability in a quarry blast and after this incident, he turned to art and started making artwork using natural ingredients, specifically the parts of the coconut tree. His sculptures exhibited in Kottayam in world travel week program had received a lot of appreciation. The main entrance decorated by him in South India book fare, LBS engineering college exhibition, CPCRI, Pilicode Agriculture Research Centre and other palm fairs have brought him many rewards and recognitions.
