Mangaluru: The first ever wine expo in the city gave a new definition to a weekend buzz as wine enthusiasts flocked Kadri Park and spent their Saturday tasting and purchasing some of the best wines available in India. Mangaluru citizens could choose among the 13 wineries which participated from various states across India.

The Karnataka State Department of Horticulture and Karnataka Wine Board conducted Mangaluru Wine Fest to bring in wine enthusiasts of the city to one place while promoting grape growers at the same time. This fest showcased old wine in new bottles with a 10 percent discount on them which made it even harder for aficionados to resist the red temptation.

Apart from the entertainment programmes, another major crowd puller inside Kadri Park was a platform where children and adults stomped on grapes just the way traditional wineries do it. Fine wine always goes with fine dine-in order to give visitors an experience of good food with good wine, several food stalls were also put up.

At the inaugural ceremony of the wine expo, District In-charge Minister of Dakshina Kannada, B Ramanath Rai mentioned that he does not drink alcohol in any form but he has heard that wine has medicinal values and is good for health if consumed in limited quantities. “Events like this will definitely cheer up grape growers and encourage them to grow sufficient quantities”, he added.

Taking a large sip of one brand of wine, Chief Whip of Legislative Council, Ivan D’Souza agreed with Ramanath Rai and said that wine can be really beneficial if consumed in appropriate quantity. “Red wine is good for health and in certain cases, physicians themselves recommend a drink since it is good for maintaining healthy skin”, he said.

Ravindra Shankara Mirje, the Chairman of Wine Board said that such events will help grape growers all over the state. “Several wine festivals including three international ones were conducted in the state ever since the Wine Board was established. In January 2017, Bengaluru will be home to another international level wine festival put in order to bring out the wineries to showcase their brands”, Ravindra mentioned.

The wine fest was inaugurated on Saturday, November 26 and will continue till 28 November at the same venue.
