Mangaluru: A total of 18,169 families have been provided with LPG connection under the union government’s ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana (PMUY)’ till date in Dakshina Kannada district.
Informing about the statistics at Patrika Bhavan on Thursday, December 22, Dakshina Kannada district nodal officer for PMUY H C Krishna said, “The scheme was formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Ballia in Uttar Pradesh on May 1, 2016. Since its inception, oil companies have released more than 5.86 crore LPG connections on all India basis under the scheme. In Dakshina Kananada district, the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has provided LPG connections to 5277 families, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to 3754 and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to 9138 families under the scheme till date”, he informed.
Informing about the benefits of the scheme Krishna said, “PMUY is a revolution which has removed smoke from the kitchens of the poor households in the country by providing them accessibility to clean cooking fuel LPG and making it one of the largest social inclusion initiatives so far. The scheme also resulted in the reduction in emissions of pollutants such as methane, black carbon and organic carbon released by inefficient solid fuel stoves with the first two species contributing to global warming”, he informed.
HPCL Chief Manager N Ramesh was also present.
