Mangaluru: The ‘Press Club Day’ organized in the city by Mangaluru’s Press Club saw a great gathering of members of the media and their families. The Press Club Awards for the year 2016 were also presented to the achievers of the year in the media field.

Before several stage programmes organized for the audience in Scouts Bhavan on Sunday 18 December, Dakshina Kannada District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai addressed the media but not in a press conference but for the press itself. He said, “The need for modern society is to highlight pro-developmental activities in the media. Journalists play a major role in creating opinion among the people and they help bring injustice to a halt.”

“Usually, people find loopholes in certain journalists and they blame the whole media community for mistakes that the irresponsible journalists did. This should stop immediately and let the fourth estate of democracy do it’s duty”, Rai added.

The Press Club Award was conferred to Renita Lobo and Shamita Rao of Mother Theresa School, Shankara Narayana, Sameera and Fouzia of Kadaba Aims College with Rs. 10,000 cash, a citation and a memento from the Press Club of Mangaluru. Eight journalists who won various awards in different categories were felicitated and the journalists who won in the sports meet for media members were presented with their awards for sports.

Followed by the felicitation and award ceremony, a Yakshagaana programme on the ‘Mahisha Mardini’ story was played for the gathering. Many journalists belonging to various media participated and showed their talent in Yakshagaana. Cultural programme was also in store for the audience along with dance and classical music.

Mangaluru North MLA Moideen Bawa and Dakshina Kannada District Information Officer Khadar Shah were present at the occasion along with Press Club President Ronald Anil Fernandes.
