Mangaluru: The ‘Aakrosh Divas’ organised by the Congress party on Monday, to express ire against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation move evoked poor response in coastal belt, barring Kasaragod.
While the Congress and the Communist parties resorted to holding protests in Mangaluru, the region remained unperturbed. As told by top Congress leaders, the Aakrosh Divas only remained confined to speeches and no bundh was observed in the Port City.
While the Congress members staged a protest outside Town Hall here, the Communist party members staged a stir outside DCs office and attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for calling back Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination notes.
Meanwhile, as a counter to Aakrosh Divas, outfits like Yuva Brigade, BJP Yuva Morcha and Hindu Jagrana Vedike members went out celebrating the note ban by distributing flowers, sweets etc in Mangaluru. While some served tea and coffee in bus stands, some others went to banks and post offices and distributed sweets, flowers etc to thank citizens for standing up in support of the brave decision of the PM.
Bandh total in Kasaragod
Meanwhile, in Kasargod district, the bandh called for by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) managed to garner outstanding response. Private as well as government buses remained off road on Monday in support of the bandh called to oppose the demonetisation move. Commercial establishments remained closed and the entire district seemed to have come to a standstill.
With the region being sensitive to political clashes, the police too made adequate security arrangements to ensure that peace was not disturbed by miscreants.
Banks remained functional, but several schools had declared holiday keeping the bandh in mind.
