Barbeque Nation organizes “Biggest Foodie Contest” at Mangaluru

Mangaluru: The much-loved destination for foodies in the city, Barbeque Nation, organized the “Biggest Foodie Contest” on Wednesday, August 10. The event was held by the barbeque specialists of the country on the occasion of their first anniversary in Mangaluru.
As many as 19 participants took part in the event. Every participant was given a full plate filling of mouth-watering vegetarian and non-vegetarian according to their choices. They had to eat as much as they could in ten minutes. All they had to do was not use their bare hands but only use the cutlery to eat. Atul Kamath, an engineering student from Canara College and Roopal D’Costa, an Infosys employee were the eventual finalists. Roopal emerged winner at the end of the competitive eating contest.

Six vegetarians and 13 non-vegetarians participated in the event which saw all the employees and the team behind Mangaluru’s Barbeque Nation get together and encourage them. A tie-breaker was held to decide the winner between Atul and Roopal.

Atul who was the qualifier from the first round of 10 participants spoke midway and said that he loved participating in competitive food eating events. He said,” My mom always says that I need to take part in events like these. I have been to various food eating competitions. I stood the second runner-up in a panipuri eating competition in 2011 where I gobbled up 55 panipuris in 5 minutes. Unfortunately, I lost by two panipuris. I have my own Instagram page for food lovers as well”.

Rishab, student from Manipal Institute of Technology said that he had come all the way from Manipal to participate. “Every food joint should organize such food eating competitions for food lovers. I watched many videos over the internet and got inspired. I prepared myself well for this event by watching the food eating competitions’ videos,” he said.

With overwhelming joy, winner Roopal said that she would always end up eating more at home which helped her to prove her eating skills today. “I came to know about the event through Facebook. I am feeling quite full now. I am feeling happy and proud as well,” she said.

On being queried about what she would do with the prize that includes the food voucher, Roopal replied that she would come with her friends and families to Barbeque Nation to have their hearts’ fill.

Shubham Kumar Shukla, Marketing Manager (South India) gave away the prizes to the participants as well as the winner. Roopal was presented Rs 5000 worth food voucher and a trophy for being the winner of the contest. A 3D cut out of Roopal will be placed at the outlet for a month.
