Mangaluru: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, National Service Scheme of Swastika School, Mangaluru in collaboration with the Public Relations Council of India Young Communicators’ Club, Mangaluru Chapter, Rotary Club of Mangaluru City, Ladyhill Victoria Girls Composite Pre-University College, Mangaluru, JCI Mangaluru Samrat, and JCI Mangaluru Spoorthi, organised a beach cleaning on Saturday October 2 at 8.00 am in Panambur Beach.

The guests offered floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhiji’s portrait.

The Chief Guest of the event was C. A. Simon, Superintendent of Police, Anti-corruption Bureau, Western Range, Mangaluru. Commissioner, Mangaluru Urban Development Authority, and Mangaluru Deputy Director, Karnataka Tourism Development N. Manikya inaugurated the function. Yathish Baikampady, Former Chief Executive Officer, Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project was the guest of honour.

Stating that beach cleaning has been a regular feature of this coast, Yathish Baikampady said that after monsoon, it is very important to involve every citizen and youngsters to clean the beach. He spoke about the benefits of such a programme. The first is that it shows where the trash comes from, which is eye-opener for everyone. Most of the times it is thought that beaches are filled with trash and it is thrown by local residents, but that is not true. 99 per cent of it is discharged into drains, rivers, and finally the sea, he said.

Cleaning is not the only solution. It also creates an awareness on finding the source and those who participate in beach cleaning will be aware of common mistakes and how to avoid them, he opined.

Dr. Raghavendra Holla N., Chairman, PCRI Mangaluru, Canute J. Pinto, President of Rotary Club Mangaluru City, Malini Hebbar, Principal SNS, Maria Ujvala A.C, Principal Victoria Girls Composite P.U College, Tini Dcosta, President of JCI Mangaluru Samrat, Ananya Hegde, President of JCI Mangaluru Spoorthi, Vidhya Shetty, NSS officer, SNS and Manoj Rao, Secretary of YCC Mangaluru were present for the event.
