A tyre burning incident has been reported from Bangra Kulur. In a separate incident one of the college buses plying towards Nanthoor was danaged by miscreants.
Mangaluru: Essential services are likely to be impacted in Dakshina Kannada on September 2, with 10 central trade unions going ahead with one-day nationwide strike to protest against changes in labour laws. Buses and autorickshaws are likely to be off the road.
These ten unions claim a combined membership of 15 crore workers in public as well as private sector enterprises including banks and insurance companies and they have decided to go ahead with the strike after their talks with a group of senior ministers earlier this month failed to yield desired results.
Canara Bus Operators’ Association, which operates about 4,000 express and service buses in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators’ Association, which operates about 360 city buses within a 22-km radius in Mangaluru, hinted on Tuesday that their buses might not operate on Wednesday.
A B Ibrahim, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada has declared holiday for all schools and colleges in the district on Wednesday in view of the nation wide bandh called by the trade unions.
Motor Transport and Engineering Workers’ Union, affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and some other trade unions have supported the bandh. The KSRTC staff and workers’ union, Mangaluru, has also supported the bandh. Some autorickshaw unions have supported the bandh as well.The CITU has particularly opposed the Road Transport and Safety Bill, 2015, proposed by the Union government.
