Bird survey: 76 species spotted in Nitte campuses in M’luru

Mangaluru: As many as 76 species of birds were spotted at Nitte (Deemed to be) University’s Deralakatte Campus in the “Campus Bird Count-2023.”

The survey was conducted at the Nitte (Deemed to be) University’s Deralakatte and Panir campuses from February 18 to February 21. Birds have begun to migrate to the campuses as a result of the green initiatives.

The Campus Bird Count 2022, which has been conducted every year since 2015, is part of the Great Backyard Bird Count organised by the Bird Count India. This year, more than 250 campuses across India registered for the bird count.

Asian Koel, Cattle Egret, Brahminy Kite, Black Kite, Common Iora, Black Drongo, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Red-whiskered Bulbul, Red-wattled Lapwing, and Common Kingfisher were among the notable birds seen during the survey. Migratory birds like the Purple Sunbird and Indian Pitta were seen, as well as nocturnal species including the Indian Scops Owl, Brown owl, Indian Nightjar, and Jerdon’s Nightjar.
