Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City bus stand at State Bank, once plagued by instances of urination, has undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks to vibrant Warli paintings. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ramakrishna Mission Swachh Bharat mission, has turned a previously neglected space into an aesthetically pleasing area.

Earlier highlighted by Daijiworld on January 11, the bus stand faced a significant issue of urination on walls and footpaths, causing a foul smell and rendering the footpaths unsuitable for walking. Despite the presence of a public toilet, drivers and conductors preferred urinating on the footpaths.

In response, bus drivers and conductors took matters into their own hands, appointing individuals to monitor and deter public urination. Anthony, an elderly person, and another individual have been vigilant from 5 am to 9 pm, ensuring cleanliness and deterring offenders. In recognition of their efforts, drivers and conductors contribute funds daily, supporting Anthony’s commitment to maintaining the area.

The once-troubled footpath has seen significant improvements, with the public now freely walking along it. Anthony, though homeless, has found a source of sustenance and income through his role in monitoring the area. Despite facing challenges, including physical aggression, he remains resolute with the support of bus drivers and conductors in ensuring the cleanliness of the bus stand.
