CBSE school starts agricultural course to attract youngsters to farming

Mangaluru: Though our country happens to be an agrarian economy, the agricultural studies hardly feature in youths’ academic or career option. The condition of our farmers continues to be in a sorry state not to mention the several middlemen, the presence of unorganised markets etc., that fetch them low prices for their produce.

While farmer deaths, morchas continue to hog the headlines in the media, the government is yet to come up with a concrete solution by way of reforms-political as well as educational-to turn farming into a lucrative profession for the generation. Here in Mangaluru, a school seems to have taken a right step in this direction by introducing “agriculture science” as part of its academic curriculum in a bid to educate its students about the basics of farming. The school, in question, Sharada Vidyanikethana Public School (CBSE) located at Talapady has introduced “agriculture science” textbooks compulsorily for its students from class 5 to 10.

Speaking to Newskarnataka, M B Puranik, President of Shardha Group of Institutions said, “This is an effort to create interest among students about agriculture. Indian economy relies mainly on agriculture. The young generation should know about agricultural practices. They should be familiar with agriculture including the cultivation of commercial crops.”

Puranik also asserted that the school has focused on organic farming techniques and the crops will be cultivated at the school using Swadeshi techniques only and natural manures.

“Already we are establishing compost units and later we will also emphasise on constructing vermicompost thus giving more importance to Swadeshi techniques in agriculture. Students will also be acquainted with practical farming beside the academics”, he added.

The school has reserved 3.5 acres for the cultivation and in the coming days, the agriculture will also be extended to 7 acres of land.

Students from each class have to attend one practical and two theory classes in a week. Students will secure marks on theory and practical knowledge.
