Mangaluru: The Fifth District and Sessions Court Puttur has granted conditional bail to Chaithra Kundapur, who was remanded to judicial custody for alleged assault on a leader of Hindu outfit few days ago.

Though there was hearing on November 3, Chaithra did not appear before the Court in the pretext of ill-health on that day. As Chaithra had filed a separate bail application at Sessions Court in Puttur, she was granted conditional bail on Monday, November 5. However, she has to remain in judicial custody until Wednesday as Tuesday is government holiday, sources said.

Chaithra, a young journalist-turned-Hindutva activist known for her aggressive speeches was arrested after she allegedly assaulted Guruprasad Panja, taluk secretary of Hindu Jagaran Vedike, with the help of her supporters at Subrahmanya in Sullia taluk on October 24. Police nabbed Chaithra and six of her supporters on the very next day and produced them before Sullia JMFC (Judicial Magistrate of First Class) Court, where she was remanded judicial custody.
