Mangaluru: Mangaluru City Police arrested two persons and seized Rs. 1.75 crore from their possession, thereby cracking a major heist that took place in Urwa market two weeks ago, in Urwa police station limits.

The arrested have been identified as Abdul Munnan (29), son of Abdul Khader, a resident of K.B Road, Talapady and Razi (26), a resident of Alape, Padil. The key accused, Abdul Munnan has eight pending cases including two murder cases, one of which occurred in the year 2012 in Ullal and another one took place at Konaje in the year 2016. But another accused Razi has no any pending cases, sources said.
Informing about the case, Commissioner of Police T R Suresh said that the accused took the help of four others who are yet to be arrested.

Background

The robbery happened on October 23, 2018, wherein complainant Manjunath Ganapathi Palamnakar was waylaid by two persons at Lady Hill Circle. When he alighted the bus, the two approached him saying that ACP Manjunath Shetty has called him and was waiting in a car. Palamnakar fell in the trap of the strangers, who took the car to Bajpe, soon after their target sat in the car.

Later, they snatched two mobile phones and cash of around Rs 2.35 crore from the procession of Manjunath Ganapathi.

Though Manjunath was robbed by the miscreants, he did not give complaint at Urwa police station on the same day. He took three days to file a complaint and informed that he has been robbed off Rs 15 lakh by the unidentified men. Based on the complaint, Commissioner of Police T R Suresh formed a special team headed by City Crime Branch (CCB) inspector Shantharam, sub-inspector Shyam Sundar and Urwa Inspector Raveesh S Nayak. The team succeeded to arrest the two accused.

During interrogation, it is revealed that a jewellery shop located at Carstreet in the city, owned by Santhosh Murdekar assigned Manjunath Ganapathi to collect cash from his another jewellery shop located in Mumbai. As per the direction of his owner Santhosh Murdekar, Manjunath was on his way from Mumbai to Mangaluru in a private bus on October 23, 2018. When Manjunath alighted the bus, the accused abducted him and robbed him.

Commissioner of Police Suresh informed that police would detain the complainant Manjunath Ganapathi and his boss Santhosh Murdekar for questioning. “Why the complainant Manjunath falsely stated that he has robbed off only Rs 15 lakh, despite miscreants robbing him off more than Rs 2.35 crore is yet to be known. We will take both accused into custody and interrogate them along with the complainant in order to get more details in this regard“, he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Hanumantharaya (Law and Order) and Uma Prashanth ( Crime and Traffic) were present.
