Mangaluru: Amidst the Maratha Development Board row, the Congress has demanded that Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to reinstate the Christian Development Corporation by the end of the day.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, November 18, at the DK Congress Committee Office Hall, former MLC Ivan D’Souza crtitisised the CM and demanded that he furnish a justification as to why he has rejected the corporation.

“If the government can form a development corporation for every other community, like the Marathas and Veerashaivas, then the Christian community has the right to ask the CM what made him change his mind and reject the CDC proposal. We want the CM to know that the Christian community exists in every district of the state and that they have contributed enormously to the field of education, health etc.,” the Congress leader said.

The Congress government at the time, sought the community’s opinion before forming the development corporation and began the process of setting it up. It was even mentioned in the 2019-2020 budget when the coalition government was in power, but the effort of six years have gone in vain after the current government rejected the formation of the Christian Development Corporation, Ivan said.

He further stated that in 2019, a letter was submitted by the government secretary to examine the proposal of forming the corporation, after which the finance department advised the administrative department not to pursue the formation of the corporation.

Ivan then demanded that Chief Minister BSY explain who advised him to reject the CDC, thereby hurting the sentiments of the Christian community.

“Does the CM feel that the Christians in the state are undignified? This is an injustice being done to the Christian community after all the good work that has been done for society,” he said, adding that they will continue the fight for justice.

“We demand that the Chief Minister reinstate the Christian Development Corporation during the state Cabinet meeting that is underway today, or we will take to the streets to hold the government responsible. We will also ask all the Christians in the entire state to fight for this cause until justice is served,” he said.

Congress leaders such as A C Jayaraj, Lawrence D’souza, James Praveen, Lancelot Pinto, Alston D’cunha, Ashith Pereira, Stany Alvares, and others were present.
