Mangaluru: Fisherfolk in the city who had all reasons to be happy after venturing into the sea at the end of the rainy season were out for a rude shock with slash in fish price.
As per sources, the festive season in Tamil Nadu and good fish catch in Kerala led to the price slash. Tamil Nadu is one of the biggest buyers of fish from coastal Karnataka, followed by Kerala and with TN running into festive season and Kerala basking over huge fish catch, the fish stock in Coastal belt was left with no takers. This has led to fall in fish price by 25 to 50 per cent.
However, the fish connoisseurs are beaming a wide smile because they can now relish a bowl of lip smacking fish curry or a plate of smokey masala fry without poking hole in their pocket.
The variety of fish that were priced between Rs 500-600 per kg now cost Rs 300. Even prices for Pomfret has come down to Rs 300 from Rs 700 per kg. Similarly, Mackrel, which cost Rs 90 per kg is costing about Rs 50 per kg.
Speaking to newskarnataka.com Nithin Kumar president of Trawl Boat Owners Association confirmed that the price of fish has fallen by 25% to 50% and said that it is not feasible for fishermen to go fishing in such disappointing scenario.
