Chikkamagaluru: An accused in a theft case has alleged that he was tortured by the Balehonnur police to confess to the crime. The brutally beaten accused has been admitted to Chikkamagaluru district hospital for treatment.
The victim named Haneef, who was reportedly arrested by the police in connection to a theft case on Thursday has said that he was beaten black and blue by the police who also stubbed out cigarette buds on his private part in a bid to make him confess to the crime.
About two months ago, robbers had stolen valuables worth Rs two lakhs from residence of one Athik Hussain from Magundi village and the police had nabbed Haneef, a daily wage worker living near Athik’s house in connection to this case on Thursday. The locals who have been raged by the incident have been vouching for Haneef stating that the police high-handedness was driven by their own inefficiency to nab the real culprit even after two months.
They say that pressure was mounting on t he cops to act and since they could not lay their hands on the culprits, Haneef become a scapegoat.
