Cyclone Ockhi: Coast Guard rescues fishermen stranded deep sea

Mangaluru: Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Amartya rescued fishing boat Tathwamasi (Regd No. IND KL 07 MM 5184) with 22 crew belonging to Beypore on December 3.

The boat was in distress due to gear box failure and because of rough sea conditions, it was drifting towards rocks. Ship’s technical team boarded the boat and rectified the defect within 2 hours. Thereafter, the ship escorted the fishing boat safely to Beypore.

ICGS Shoor also rescued 4 fishermen stranded at Suheli Par Island, Lakshadweep on December 3. They belong to fishing boat St Antony, which was grounded on December 2 and were surviving on rice and water. The fishermen were provided with clothes, food and medical aid by the ship.

Due to the presence of Cyclone Ockhi, rough sea conditions are prevailing. Many fishing boats have taken refuge in Karwar Bay. As many as 32 fishing boats belonging to Tamil Nadu with 346 fishermen, 14 boats belonging to Kerala with 103 fishermen, 27 boats belonging to Goa with 565 fishermen, 21 boats belonging to Mangalore with 114 fishermen and 35 fishing boats belonging to Malpe with 119 fishermen have taken shelter in Karwar.
