Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner on Thursday said that the district administration would set up checkposts on inter-state and inter-district borders to check sand transportation.

Addressing a meeting of the District Sand Monitoring Committee at his office on November 23, the DC said that eight check posts would be set up on the inter-district borders and twelve on the Karnataka-Kerala border. If the sand being transported is in violation of the law, a case will be booked under mineral rules for illegal transportation of sand. The administration has planned to provide a stock yard to store the confiscated sand.

The DC also said that the district had given permits to 41 people to extract sand from CRZ area and asked them to follow the rules. He warned that any violation would result in the cancellation of the permits. The district administration has identified sand blocks in non CRZ area for sand extraction. Three sand blocks at the Nethravathi River, one at Gundya River, seven sand blocks at Kumaradhara river, and two sand blocks at Phalguni river. These sand blocks are spread over 81 acres.

He also said that it was mandatory to fix GPS units on the trucks and boats used for transporting sand. For all trucks transporting sand, GPS will be fixed within 15 days in all taluk centers and they should sport a sand vehicle sticker.
