Mangaluru: The Mangaluru Bar Association demands a Karnataka High Court Bench in the coastal city. Their plan is to ensure justice to rural people of coastal Karnataka and let them know that justice for them doesn’t have to stop at the district court.
Mangaluru Bar Association President, S P Chengappa called for a press meet on Thursday, 13 October to speak regarding the demand. He mentioned that there are more than five thousand practicing advocates in four districts in the coast including Kodagu. “Justice should be delivered to all the people of Karnataka including the ones who do not have access to judiciary. It is also an expensive affair for the clients and lawyers to travel to Bengaluru and back to get the case solved”, he said.
“There are many cases in the coastal and malnad areas of Karnataka which have a lot of cases which were shifted to the High Court and are left pending. A bench located in Mangaluru city will be a boon for the lawyers as well as justice seekers since the city has a strategic location in the state, Chengappa said.
“Bengaluru is quite far from various places in the state. Dharwad and Gulbarga has already got a bench and they are benefitted well. Since Mangaluru is located close to the other coastal districts and since it has also been proposed to be a Smart City, the Bar Association thought it would be best to have the High Court Bench in Mangaluru. The Coastal districts and malnad districts have supported this demand”, he added.
Apart from the demand made to set up the bench, Chengappa also demanded an increase in the welfare funds given to lawyers from the Government’s side. He wants the accident cover raised from Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh disregarding the age factor and number of served years.
