Mangaluru: Though the Central government has started the Mudra scheme for the benefit of the farmers, the banks in Dakshina Kannada district are allegedly misusing the scheme and refusing to release loans under Mudra scheme.

The allegation was made during the Dakshina Kannada district Development Coordination and In-charge Committee meeting held at the Zilla Panchayat office on Saturday, November 17, which was chaired by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.

Bantwal MLA Rajesh Naik raised the issue and alleged that the officials refused to give loans under Mudra scheme. “The officials in the bank convert Non-performing Assets (NPA) or bad loans into Mudra loans, which is very wrong. Though Mudra loans need to be provided for agriculture-related activities, the banks are not doing so and misusing the government scheme”, he said.

Meanwhile, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel backed MLA Rajesh Naik and informed that he too had received the same complaints from the public. “A meeting has been conducted already in this regard and instructions given to the bank officials to properly utilise Mudra scheme. However, they have failed to implement the scheme properly. Another meeting will be convened shortly in the presence of the deputy commissioner in order to review the progress of the banks’ performance”, he said.

Nalin also informed that he would seek a report from Nabard on loans which were being disbursed under Mudra scheme and other agricultural loans. The details on converting NPA into Mudra loans will also be taken from Nabard”, he informed.

Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, ZP President Meenakshi Shanthigod and CEO Dr. R Selwamani were present.
