Dr Austin Prabhu to release special 101th issue of Veez Konkani on Nov 24

Mangaluru: In a unique attempt to bridge the gap between Konkani readers spread across four states – Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala – and using scripts such as Devnagiri, Kannada, Roman and Malayalam, Chicago-based Mangalurea, writer, playwright Dr Austin Prabhu has been publishing a weekly “Veez Konkani”. He has consistently published 100 issues, each issue consisting 100+ pages and the 101th issue is ready for release on Sunday, November 24. To mark this occasion, Dr Austin Prabhu is in Mangaluru to release the 101th special issue in a glittering ceremony to be held at the St Agnes College College at 6 PM.

Basti Vaman Shenoy, Chairman of World Konkani Centre, Eric Ozario, Gurkar, Mandda Sobhan, Daijiworld monthly editor-in-chief, Hemacharya, Singer Composer Vihwas Rebimbus and Rev Sr Dr Jeswina, principal of St Agnes College, will be the chief guests on the occasion. Fr Chethan Lobo, former editor of Uzwad, will preside over the function.

Prizes for the winners of Veez Konkani’s annual literary competition, held in memory of Konkani music legend Late Wilfy Rebimbus, will be distributed on the occasion. The website for “Ashwadi Prakashan” and “Ek Novo Somsar” by Fr Chethan Lobo will also be released during the programme.

A miltiligual music concert “Sur Project” by Jaison J Sequeira will conclude the programme.

About Dr Austin and Veez Konkani

Dr Austin was born in Nanthoor, Mangalueu. In the 70s and 80s, he was dynamic youth leader, playwright and actor, and set a record in Konkani by editing and publishing four papers at a time- Mithr, Jhelo, Kannik and Yuvak.

He was the founder secretary of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Karnataka® and his play “Ankwar Celly” won the best drama award from Goa Bhasha Mandal. After emmigrating to the US, he became active in the Lions Club and became the first Governor of Indian Origin at Lions Mother District. In recognition of his service to society, a street in Illinois was named after him.

After his retirement, Dr Austin started the weekly, Veez Konkani with the use of Konkanverter – a transliteration tool developed by World Konkani Centre. His unique idea of publishing the magazine in four scripts has bridged the gap between Konkani readers.

The weekly now has substantial readers across the globe as it is free to read. Moreover, free advertisements of Konkani events are also published. Every issue features one Konkani achiever on the cover page and carries Konkani news, articles and literature.

Editor, publisher Dr Austin Prabhu, singer and composer Jaison J Sequeira, editor of the website Kittal Henry Mendonsa and renowned Konkani poet Melvyn Rodrigues were present.
