Mangaluru: In a country which accounts to 40 percent of the world’s drowning cases, an Australian swimming coach imparted knowledge to the Mangalorean swim team regarding effective water safety measures. As many as 35 students and their parents were educated about the importance of water safety measures at the city’s swimming pool.

Ceri Weeks is an internationally acclaimed swimming instructor who teaches swimming coaches on how to teach. She conducts various classes all over the country whenever she flies down. Since the past three years she has been teaching students and coaches under “AustSwim” training course which is a complete package of water safety and competitive swimming.

On Wednesday, November 16, Ceri shared a few water safety techniques with the students as per the Australian standards. “As a primary measure, we must allow the young children to think for themselves on how they could use various props found around the pool to stay afloat. With a series of trials, children will understand the science behind staying afloat in deeper waters”, she said.

Ceri further went on to say that teaching water safety to children and adults alike is most important. “Before a swimmer can be a champion, they must be trained in maintaining safety in the water and be aware of techniques to survive”, she said while conducting activities among the children so that they understood water dynamics in swimming against the current upstream or in a whirlpool.

The interaction session between the swimmers, their parents and Ceri Weeks was organized by Mangalore Aquatic Club under head coach Partha Varanasi and club coach Yajnesh Bengre.
