Mangaluru: Despite several measures by the police department to prevent anti-social and illegal activities like molestation, eve-teasing, chain snatching, rape among others, police were not able to completely curb these activities in Mangaluru.

A phone call by a civilian during the recent phone-in-programme at police commissioner’s office confirmed this. Though commissioner of police T R Suresh assured of taking all appropriate measures to prevent such activities, it is not an easy task. The prime areas like Hampankatta, State Bank, Lady Goschen hospital, KPT Circle, Nanthoor junction, Town Hall, Mangaladevi, Bolar, Ladyhill among other areas are always busy, but despite that anti-social activities are being reported in these places every now and then, especially after 8 pm.

Hence, caller asked the police department to intensify their night beat in these areas after 8 pm. Eve teasing is always more at bus stands when women are waiting for buses. Though some women dare to lodge the complaint, some others refuse to do the same fearing threat or some legal complications.

Though installing CCTV cameras in public places is the need of the hour, no cameras have been fixed at some key points of the city. Though cameras were fixed in some places, the footage in the cameras have not been of much help due to poor quality of the visuals. Hence, there is a need to put quality CCTV cameras and depute police personnel in some key points of the city.
