Mangaluru: Raging fires were reported for the second time at the Pachanady dump yard on April 4.

As per initial reports, dry waste is being considered as the cause for the fire break-out, and a short-circuit is being speculated to be the catalyst. As per reliable sources, fire services from the nearby areas have been called on to contain the fire. As per reports, the fire has been contained.

Fire services were unable to contain the fire and the fire kept burning for 5 hours. According to sources, the cause of the fire was the illegal dumping of medical waste and chemicals during the night.

A decade ago, 300 houses were engulfed in smoke after a fire broke out at the dump yard. The dump yard has become a constant problem for residents living in the vicinity with the constant stench and smog.

Due to the intensity of the fire, the waste that was treated got gutted. Firemen rushed to the spot and undertook the task of dousing the fire.

Despite efforts to extinguish the fire that had engulfed the treated waste, residents of the area are worried that the toxic smoke from the burned waste will be brought into the air. The fire spread to other parts of the city as well. Owing to the breeze, firefighters found it difficult to put out the fire.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Rajendra KV, city corporation commissioner Akshay Sridhar and environmental engineer visited the spot.
