The fire was first noticed in the waste bin in the post office and it soon spread to the application forms and documents on a nearby table. However, the timely action of the fire service personnel prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the room.

Speaking to newskarnataka, Shivappa  Gowda, District Fire Service Officer,  said the entire room was filled with smoke when they arrived at the spot. He said the exact cause of the fire is not known and that possibility of a short circuit is ruled out as there was no electrical equipment close by the  waste bin.

One suspicion is that the spark ignited by something which was discarded in the bin, might have caused the fire.

The post office personnel said several forms which were procured just recently, have been destroyed in the fire.
