Mangaluru: Four people have been arrested in connection with the recent murder of flower vendor and Bajrang Dal activist Prashanth Poojary that created a tense atmosphere followed by protests in Moodbidri here. A team of special police force is said to have carried out the arrests.
The accused arrested are Mohammed Hanif (36), a resident of Adyapady, Mohammed Ilyas (27), a resident of Moodbidri, Ibrahim Liyaqat (26) of Bantwal, and Abdul Rashid (39) of Mulky.

Addressing the media at the Commissioner’s office on Sunday October 18, Police Commissioner S Murugan said that the accused have been involved in the assault case of Handelu Ashok and Vasu as well as another Jaya Kotian assault case. They have admitted to their role in all of the cases he informed.

It was also intimated that Mohammed Haneef is the main culprit in the murder of Poojary, while the other three arrested were co-conspirators.

“The murder, as admitted by the accused, was committed as revenge. The communal clashes that followed in the city were because of Poojary being involved in right wing activities”, he said and added that the clashes were not communal, it was a “revenge plotted by a few youth” and hence everyone must refrain from calling it a “Hindu-Muslim” clash.

Regarding the allegations that the key witness in the case, Vaman Poojary, was murdered and that he had received international calls before his death, the commissioner clarified that there were no such calls made to him and that the rumors were false. “Vaman was very much disturbed and depressed with the whole issue and this might have led him to commit suicide”, he said.

Further speaking on the murder and the clashes that followed in the region earlier, he said that discussions have already been held with various religious leaders in order to restore peace and communal harmony and that the police have always ensured peace in the region. “We now need public support”, he added.

It was also informed that the other five main accused in the case are yet to be arrested and that further investigations are on. On being asked about the how and where of the arrests of the four accused, he refused to divulge the information and said that it is a part of the investigation, information that everyone is not privy to.
